When you think of PC gaming, you probably think of a mouse and keyboard. That makes sense considering you already use a mouse and keyboard for everything else and they're incredibly versatile and precise. But some games are just best played with a controller, and if you happen to own a PlayStation 5, you can use the DualSense controller with your Windows 11 (or 10) PC.

The DualSense has a significantly different design from its predecessors. The Xbox Wireless Controller is still arguably the best PC controller on the market, but the DualSense is certainly good enough that if you have a PlayStation 5 already, you can avoid buying a new controller and just stick with the controller that came with your console. Here's how you can set it up.

Connecting the PS5 controller to your PC

Wired connection

There are two ways to connect the DualSense controller to your PC. The easiest is to simply plug in using the USB Type-C port on the controller and a USB port on your PC. You just need a USB cable, which you probably already have, whether it's from your phone or another device. The cable does need to support data throughput, which some cables don't so if you try one and it doesn't work, try a different cable before you give up.

Bluetooth (wireless) connection

If you want to go wireless, the PlayStation 5 controller also supports Bluetooth so that you can connect that way. Most modern laptops and PCs have Bluetooth these days, though you may need an adapter for older machines. Connecting a controller this way is still fairly straightforward. Here's how it goes:

  1. Open the Settings app on your PC and go to the Bluetooth & devices section (in Windows 11) or Devices (in Windows 10).
  2. Click Add device at the top of the page.

  3. Choose Bluetooth in the window that pops up to start searching for devices.

  4. Enter pairing mode on the PlayStation 5 controller by holding the PlayStation and Share buttons at the same time until the lights around the touchpad turn on.
  5. On your PC, the controller should appear as a Wireless controller. Select it and wait for the connection to finish.

Now your controller is connected to your PC, but the experience isn't exactly seamless from here. Windows is designed to specifically work with one kind of input based on the Xbox Wireless Controller, so that's what most games support out of the box. Thankfully, there are solutions for this.

How to set up the DualSense controller with Steam

Steam is the most popular gaming platform on PC, and one of the great things it does is allow you to add various controllers that Windows doesn't support very well out of the box, including the DualSense, and Steam is already set up to support DualSense controllers easily. That means you can probably use the controller with most of your games since Steam has a very extensive library of titles, and it will even tell you if a game is optimized to work with the DualSense controller. In fact, even non-Steam games can work this way since you can add your own games to your Steam library. If you haven't yet, you can download Steam here.

If you'd like to configure your DualSense controller, here's how you can get into the necessary settings:

  1. Launch Steam and, from the main window, click Steam and then Settings.

  2. Open the Controller tab on the side menu bar.
  3. By default, Steam already enabled Steam input for PlayStation controllers in games that don't natively support them. If you want Steam's settings to override native support in games that have it, change the PlayStation Controller Support dropdown menu to Enabled.

  4. To test and configure the controller inputs, click Begin Test next to Test Device Inputs.

  5. Here, you can test that the inputs are all recognized correctly. If you want to change them, click Setup Device Inputs and follow the instructions.
  6. Click Back when you're done.
  7. To configure controller inputs as keyboard inputs, scroll down and click Edit next to Desktop layout. Here, you can assign each button to a different key.
  8. If you want to calibrate gyro controls, joystick deadzones, or even change the LED light settings on your controller, you can click Open next to Calibration and advanced settings. This should be optional, though.

That's all you should need to do in order to set up your PlayStation controller. In fact, you shouldn't really need to do anything unless you want to change any settings considering Steam already supports PlayStation controllers out of the box. This is all in case you want to dive deeper into those settings.

Using the DualSense controller with non-Steam games

Now, say you have a game installed from outside of Steam, such as from the Epic Games Store. You can still use this method to configure your PlayStation 5 controller. All you need to do is:

  1. Open Steam
  2. Click Games in the menu at the top, and choose Add a non-Steam game to My Library.

  3. Find the executable file for the game you want to add.

This will let you use the Steam configuration tool with almost any non-Steam game. However, there may be some exceptions, specifically Microsoft Store games. Because these games aren't stored in user-accessible folders, they're not as easy to add to your Steam library.

How to set up the DualSense controller with DS4Windows

Another option to get your PS5 (or PS4) controller working on your Windows PC without using Steam is to use an app called DS4Windows. This is specifically designed to make third-party controllers, such as the DualShock 4 and DualSense, be recognized by the computer as Xbox 360 controllers (which are fundamentally the same as the latest Xbox controllers).

Setting things up is fairly easy. You simply need to download DS4Windows from GitHub and install it. The program will install some required drivers to make your PS5 controller recognized as an Xbox controller, which may require a reboot. But once you connect your controller again, you'll be good to go. The controls on your controller will be automatically mapped to the equivalent on Xbox. Still, you can configure different profiles, so the buttons are mapped in the most comfortable way for you.

One thing to note is that if you're trying to use DS4Windows in Steam games, you'll need to disable both PlayStation and Xbox controller configuration support in the Steam settings in order for things to work normally.

Keep in mind that the current release of DS4Windows is also the last one, so it's possible this tool will stop working at some point. For now, though, this is still a good solution.

What Steam games support the DualSense controller?

Thanks to the built-in support for DualSense controllers on Steam, most of the games that support controller can be used with a DualSense controller without too many issues. Thankfully, Valve makes it easy to see what games do support the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller with a running list of supported games, including partial or full support.

Some titles may be designed specifically for the DualSense controller, too, meaning they can use features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. There's a running list of these games on PCGamingWiki.

The DualSense is a great controller for PC gaming

Whether you're a bigger fan of the PlayStation controller designs or you simply want to use a controller you already have, this is a great way to get a similar experience to what Xbox controllers usually offer on Windows, and it can be a much better control method for some games.

One thing you may need to look out for is that since the PlayStation 5 controller has a speaker, it can sometimes become the default audio output for Windows when you connect it, which means the audio experience won't be great. You can use the Quick Actions panel in Windows 11 to choose a different default audio output.
