The Pokemon Company wants to make sure younger generations are still interested in Pokemon (2)

The Pokemon franchise has been around for 25 years now. Despite its highs and lows, the IP has managed to maintain a huge fanbase. This is due in part to kids that grew up with Pokemon in the 90s and 2000s have now become adults, continuing to remain a fan of the franchise. However, The Pokemon Company realizes that brand new fans are needed too.

The Pokemon Company chief operations officer Takato Utsunomiya recently talked about the matter in an interview with LADbible, revealing that “our goal is to keep passing on Pokemon to the next generation, over the span of hundreds of hundreds of years And in order to do that, to do that, of course, we need to make sure that we are still keeping the younger generations, the kids interested”.

Utsunomiya admitted that this isn’t going to be easy. Utsunomiya explained why, saying that “one thing I can say, kids are very, very honest, they, they don’t play things that they’re not interested in. So if you, if your brand feels like it’s something that’s old or boring, they will immediately dismiss it. So that’s a big challenge. Making Pokemon continue to feel like something new and exciting for the younger audience, the kids, it’s very important for us. It’s easy to focus on adults, they have a lot of disposable income, you can see their reactions in real time on social media, for example, but on the other hand, kids, they have, maybe just a little bit of money they can spend so they really focus on the things that they are only interested in and they’re very honest in that regard. So a big challenge is to just make sure that we aren’t losing track of keeping them interested”.

The fact is, all these Pokemon games are the same thing over and over. Its deep stats keep getting deeper for the nerds but the loop is always the same, game after game. So if you are new to it, it can be addictive, but it gets repetitive and boring after a while unless you are one of the nerds who goes all in. Ive played,Blue, Sun, and Leaf Green. All of them have basically the same gameplay. I didnt really have fun either, it was just an OCD type game loop that was hard to quit. My point is that they really do need to attract new players because the old ones drop off after a while.

I love and will always love Pokemon, I just wished they’d slow down with releases and give each game more time to breathe. I just want more time to spend with the Pokemon I love (and also would be nice if they made all Pokemon transferable). We have so many amazing Pokemon, many of which have barely been able to shine in recent gens. It’d be nice if there was more of an emphasis on the Pokemon we already have then making heaps of more and more new ones. I don’t want any particular Pokemon to be forgotten or ignored.

I wish that they would remake all the old games for the switch. I wanna play sun and moon cause I never got to finishing it and no longer have the console. They could remake all of them in the switch style and I’d play them all again

If you mearly pinpoint the fundamentals of a game series, then every game is essentially the same. It’s like GT and Forza are the same game. All you do is drive around in a car and beat other cars, after a while it gets repetitive. And to a degree, I’m right, but that would mean that I’m completely ignoring every QOL improvement they have added since it’s first iteration. Take God of war for example. Since the first one, all you do is button mash, and watch a 30 second video after killing a boss or a wave of monsters, and again, I would be right, but I would be ignoring every QOL improvement that has been added since the begining. This can be said about almost every game.

Yeah, but while most series build on their QoL changes or extras, pokemon will introduce something people like and then take it away next game. There’s no building upon itself to make it great, it just keeps the core gameplay and chooses what side content (if any) and now pokemon it keeps for the next game.

As long as they actually take the time to make sure the games get the time they need to be quality products. Another Scarlet/Violet fiasco won’t look good for them.

That’s so odd that they’re worried on getting the kids Market. It seems like all they’ve ever been able to grab.

I’d be curious on if they’d ever be able to cater and keep their adult market. Couldn’t they do something similar like a little system of capture the kids attention, get them again in teenager years and then finally capture them in the Adult market? Almost like following a pattern.. but I don’t think they care to really capture the adult market.

Takato is completely out of touch. Older fans already feel like the games are catering to any generation but us.

The story gets more juvenile every generation and the gameplay refuses to meet even the basic QoL that amateur fan games met a decade ago.

I beat Pokemon Yellow as a 5 year old, and yet Takato keeps making the games easier. He’s definitely not making games for me, or for my generation

Well yeah, they’re not making Pokemon games for older generations because we aren’t the target audience. They’re focused on kids since most games, especially nintendo, are FOR kids. It gets tiresome seeing people the same age as me, late 30s or more, complain or get salty about games catering to kids isn’t being catered to them. With Violet/Scarlet, feels like they wanted to try something different and I loved that they experimented and it (mostly) worked out! I know most folks that played didn’t feel the same way. I’m one of the people who waited to buy it because of the bugs I heard about.
There’s so many games out there for adults yet people never seem to have a problem with that or don’t play them instead.
These type of games aren’t made with adults in mind and that SHOULD be ok. Not meant with vitrolic tantruns or a sense of entitlement (nit saying you’re doing it but people in general) over it.

It’s ok to grow up and move on from stuff you once loved as a child.

Speak for yourself. If more Pokemon games would like Legend, the series would get fresh again. But that would mean that the Pokémon Company needs to be creative and that is something I haven’t seen in awhile.

Video games are mostly marketed to mature audiences. Not little kids. Most people feel like they are made for kids because people don’t know how to parent and not let their little 7 year old play games ment for teens and adults. Take poppy playtime and fnaf. These are adult games that parents pushed their 6 and 7 year Olds into. Games have been marked as mostly T and M.

They wanna keep trying to attract younger audiences, the biggest things they need to focus on are the quality of their games, and to be more creative. They had the creative aspect down with the change Legends made, and stuff like the Mystery Dungeon games (which they should really bring back). But for the quality… They’ve certainly been slacking there with the past few generations, and I don’t just mean the buggy mess that was SV’s launch.

The generic, uninteresting plots, the Pokemon models and animations, the moves’ animations when used, the rather lazy design of the hat things the new tera-thing gimmick had (seriously, they’re the same for everything, even dynamax had more flair), and of course the controversy that goes against the franchise’s whole motto: dexit. The old console games, Stadium, Colosseum, XD, Battle Revolution, they all had incredible animations for not just every Pokemon at that time, but the moves as well (or at least made the “spawn location” of the move look more unique to each ‘mon. And while they complained about there being too many ‘mon when dexit occurred, they could solve at least a chunk of that by making a reserve of higher quality versions for everything they need, and just downscale them a bit when needed, and if they make the reserve right, they could just insert them into the games without as much work as they likely have to do now, and could put more focus on the actual gameplay aspects.

They need to reevaluate and revamp their game development side of the franchise, and since GameFreak seems to be splitting their team between multiple projects (currently whatever the next Pokemon game is, and Project Bloom), but heavily against the idea of hiring more people, and Nintendo seems to be against extending the development time for the games (as much as it’s needed), then they should either invest in a second studio to have them and GameFreak swap off for every other game (ultimately allowing more time to be put into the games’ development in a similar timeframe), or just cut ties with GameFreak as a developer and hire a larger, more competent studio to take over.
